John Montgomery completed an undergraduate degree in Anthropology at the University of Arizona, a Master's in Anthropology at Texas Tech University, and a Ph.D. in Anthropology at the University of Colorado. In his final year at Colorado, Dr. Montgomery received the Earl Morris award for outstanding graduate student. His dissertation used archaeological data from the Dolores Archaeological Project, one of the largest archaeology projects undertaken in the United States.

John arrived at ENMU in 1984 to direct the Agency for Conservation and became a faculty member in 1999. His research interests include Historic Preservation, Paleoindian archaeology, Plains archaeology, and computer applications in archaeology. He has served on the board of the New Mexico Heritage Preservation Alliance for the past 2 years and is an active member of the New Mexico Archaeological Council.

He has published/co-published over 20 major cultural resource management reports as well as numerous peer reviewed journal articles and research reports. He has made over 20 professional presentations and received over $800,000 in grant awards. In 2006, Dr. Montgomery was selected as the recipient of an ENMU Presidential award for excellence in university service. In addition to his academic pursuits, John enjoys working with computers, listening to music (all types), and reading.
