Hands-On Communication ExperienceWhether you prefer writing for a newspaper, hosting your own radio program or reporting for a television newscast, Eastern offers you the chance to get real-life experience doing what you love. The Silver PackThe Silver Pack, ENMU's yearbook, provides opportunities for student photographers, writers and designers. The yearboooks, which cover the entire school year and are released to the students the following fall, are funded by student fees. Speech and DebateStudents in the debate and forensics program develop their critical thinking and reasoning skills. ENMU has a history of success in state, regional and national competitions. Debate teams have won three national championships, and individuals have excelled in national competition. The team's travel schedule offers an opportunity of a lifetime to see new and different places and to meet people who will influence our future. Scholarships are available to students with a winning work ethic. For information about the program and scholarships, contact Dr. Anthony Schroeder. KZIAKZIA, Eastern's student-run radio station is staffed entirely by student volunteers, from deejays to station manager. The station is equipped with state-of-the-art technology that gives students the chance to experience real world radio. HoundBytesENMU's HoundBytes is a student-run online magazine that was initially created as a class project for Computer-Assisted Reporting, COMM 403, in 1999. Articles written for HoundBytes are solicited from students who want to gain experience and have their work published. HoundBytes is maintained as part of the Computer-Assisted Reporting class, though articles may be submitted by any ENMU student interested in having their stories published online. Inquiries about HoundBytes should be directed to Dr. Margaret Kirby. Graduate AssistantshipsGraduate assistantships in Communicative Arts and Sciences offer students valuable experience and financial support. These are primarily teaching positions. Interested students should apply to the graduate coordinator. Application forms may be obtained from the Graduate School. For the current amount of the stipend, contact either the Graduate School or the Department of Communicative Arts and Sciences. The University waives out-of-state tuition for graduate assistants, but they must pay resident tuition and fees. Students of Public RelationsThe Students of Public Relations (SPR) organization at ENMU is dedicated to providing members with information and experience that will help them excel in the world of PR. The club participates in many activities throughout the year, including lectures, conferences and community service. The projects provide work samples for portfolios and resumes. The club is open to any ENMU student interested in public relations. For more information, please contact Patricia Dobson. Pi Kappa DeltaPi Kappa Delta is among the oldest honorary competitive speech fraternities. Its many members include hundreds of members of Congress, judges, attorneys, corporate executives. Former president Ronald Reagan was a member. The fraternity is a wonderful addition to any student's resume. For information about the organization, contact Dr. Anthony Schroeder. The ChaseThe Chase is a student-run newspaper that offers hands-on experience to blossoming journalists, graphic designers and photographers. Each week, The Chase staff designs and produces the full-size broadsheet publication. The Chase fills approximately 30 staff positions each semester, allowing students to publish work they can clip and add to their portfolios for future employers. Working with peers, faculty and the community reinforces responsible communication and gives students the opportunity to produce a publication they can be proud of. InternshipsENMU offers a variety of paid and unpaid internships throughout the academic year to provide students with the hands-on experience that employers seek. These internships are designed to fit into a student's busy schedule. Working side by side with professionals, student interns learn, gain experience and earn credit at the same time. For more information, contact Dr. Janet Roehl. KENWKENW, a public television station, broadcasts directly from ENMU. KENW offers professional equipment and first-class facilities to students majoring in broadcast production, journalism and other communication majors. Students who produce News 3 New Mexico, which airs Monday through Friday at 5 p.m., gain hands-on experience in production, news reporting, graphics, directing and audio. Auditions are held at the beginning of every semester for news anchors, directors, camera operators, and weather and sports anchors. In addition to taking a required class, COMM 220, students are welcome to volunteer for these positions at KENW. |
