Mrs. Claudia Bird

Mrs. Bird has been a faculty member in the Communicative Disorders Department at Eastern New Mexico University since 1997. Along with supervision of practicum students, she currently teaches Articulation, Phonetics, Language Assessment, and Clinical Management. Her duties include teaching distance education classes through ENMU's ITV system and she also offers online classes in Phonetics and Speech Disorders and Management. Her professional interests include semantics, voice, and language dominance issues. She has specialized in speech and language intervention in pediatric populations.

Ms. Bird has earned two masters degrees, the first in Communicative Disorders from New Mexico State University and the second from the University of New Mexico in Special Education with an emphasis in the severely and profoundly challenged. She is currently working on a doctoral degree from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and is presently in the dissertation process. She has worked as a public school Speech/Language Pathologist, as a Child Find Coordinator, and as a private contractor throughout New Mexico and in Wyoming . She has extensive experience in working with the Native American population, as well as in working with Hispanic populations.

Ms. Bird also serves as the National Student Speech, Language, and Hearing Association faculty advisor at Eastern New Mexico Universtiy. She has further served on various committees at Eastern New Mexico University including the ASHA Reaccreditation Committee. She has worked closely with area Head Start programs and has been instrumental in providing needed speech and language therapy to local preschoolers.

Ms. Bird was born in Durango, Colorado but has lived much of her life in New Mexico. She currently lives on a small ranch and is a wife, mother, and a first time grandmother. She has two daughters (both in college), and one son (recently graduated from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque with a degree in psychology). When Ms. Brid is not busy with her teaching duties, she is actively involved in working beside her husband in their locally-owned business. Her hobbies include reading, gardening, and traveling. She loves her job at Eastern New Mexico University and absolutely enjoys the students she encounters each semester.
