Dr. Suzanne Swift

Dr. Swift is currently the Department Chair for Health and Human Services and an Associate Professor in ENMU's CDIS Department. Her teaching and clinical interests focus primarily on research design and methodology, differential assessment techniques, pediatric/adolescent issues in language/articulation, severe and profound disabilities, and any kind of sensory impairment including blindness, low vision, deafness, and dual sensory impairment. Her current research includes papers on phoneme expression in persons with vision loss, personnel preparation of SLPs for low incidence disabilities, and legal issues in special education and speech-language pathology.

Dr. Swift earned her B.S. in Communication Disorders from Eastern New Mexico University in 1988, her M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1991, and her Ed.D. in Special Education/Dual Sensory Impairments from Texas Tech University in May of 2000. She is currently beginning her 20th year of practice and has provided services in multiple settings to include public/private schools, hospitals, nursing homes, preschools/Headstarts, home-health care/ vocational rehab agencies, home-based, and private practice settings. The bulk of her practice has encompassed children and adolescents ages birth to 21 and she particularly enjoys working with children of bicultural backgrounds and children having low incidence disabilities or unique cognitive/behavioral challenges. She has extensive experience with bilingual Hispanic border populations as well as Native-American persons living on or near New Mexico reservations. She has been employed by Eastern New Mexico University on a full or part-time basis for the last 9 years. Dr. Swift was honored with the Eastern New Mexico University Award for Faculty Excellence in Research and Scholarly Activity in May of 2008.

On a personal note, Dr. Swift is married to a swell guy named Stephen and has 3 lovely, lively children. Her "off-duty" interests include internet shopping, harassing her colleagues, weight-lifting/running, and consuming way too many enchiladas with green sauce. She is well-known for her terrible golf game, owning too many pairs of very fashionable shoes, always wearing her Oakleys, and her strong predilection for caramel machiattos.

Dr. Swift would love to hear from you (especially if you have nice things to say). Her office hours for the Fall 2008 semester are:

  • Tuesdays: 1:00–3:00
  • Wednesdays: 9:00–12:00
  • Saturdays: 1 hour by appt. only
  • Other hours are also available by apporintment
