Social Work Field Placement

Social work is both a science (practice based on evidence and theory) and an art (practice based on skills and experience). In the field education program, students integrate classroom learning and application with clients in real-world situations.

Social work majors participate in three semesters of field placement beginning in the spring semester of their junior year. Students accumulate 450 hours (at a rate of 10 hours per week for 15 weeks per semester) of hands-on-experience in social work under the supervision of agency based field instructors. Field agency sites are located in communities throughout eastern New Mexico and include government agencies and private institutions. Students complete their practicums in agencies that provide various social services such as child protection, adoption, foster care, adult protection, medical, hospital, hospice, home care, nursing home, mental health, rehabilitation, group home, school, corrections, case management, advocacy and community organization.

In field placement, students put their professional social work knowledge, values, and skills into practice helping people in need. Students' field experiences interacting with clients, colleagues and the community play an important role in the students' professional and career development, making field education an essential element of the BSW program.
