Statistics

A growing demand for graduates with special training in research and development techniques motivated the development of statistical programs at colleges and universities. The study of statistics as a separate professional field from mathematics is comparatively recent. Graduates with statistical training are employed in a broad spectrum of areas that include the business world, government, the sciences (social, biological, physical and health), and the fields of engineering and education.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a B.S./B.A. degree in mathematics with an emphasis in statistics or a minor in statistics. Statistics requires a computing background and/or a mathematics background and coursework in basic statistical methodology, probability and statistical theory. Any upper-division course with a STAT prefix may be counted as a statistics course or as a mathematics elective. A student may take courses in statistics to satisfy requirements for a major or a minor in mathematics; however, a student may not apply the same course to both a statistics minor and a mathematics major or minor.
