Physical SciencesThe Department of Physical Sciences offers courses of study in chemistry, geology and physics leading to the following bachelor's degrees.
We also offer undergraduate programs to achieve a minor in these and related subject areas, preparation for entry into medical school, pharmacy school or other allied health fields. The department will also soon offer programs for studies in forensic science, environmental science, and preparation for engineering programs at other universities. Consultation with an advisor in these additional program areas is strongly recommended early in your studies to make sure you are taking the proper prerequisite courses. In addition to these programs, we offer a Master of Science in Chemistry degree. The Physical Sciences department boasts an extremely experienced and versatile faculty with years of training in the real world. We offer high quality classes as well as intensive laboratory and field experiences. The low student-to-faculty ratio provides individual attention for each student and opportunities for student participation in hands-on research and other field experiences. Students in these programs get hands-on on experience with modern instrumentation such as scanning electron microscope (SEM), gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer (GC/MS), nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer (NMR), infrared spectrometer (FT/IR), UV/visible spectrometer, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and other advanced instruments. Students can get hands-on experience with projects ranging from fossilized dinosaur eggs to cutting edge research in nanomaterials. The chemistry program offers degree programs approved by the American Chemical Society, and the geology program is recognized by the American Institute of Professional Geologists. The best evidence of the quality of Eastern's chemistry, geology and physics programs is the placement rate of graduates in competitive national scholarship and fellowship programs, medical school, graduate school and professional employment.
